What can you Expect?

When you attend a Discover Tree Climbing event, every tree will have been subjected to a  tree hazard assessment and site-specific risk assessment. If the tree requires any work to make it safe, such as removal of dead branches, this will be conducted by our representative.

On the day of the event, a new risk assessment will be carried out. The area around the tree will be cordoned off and signed. The climbing systems will be rigged and climbing equipment readied for the first climbers

We offer whole day sessions for small groups where you can really get to grips with climbing and gain a fuller appreciation of trees.

Or we offer shorter session for multiple climbers:

Climbing sessions

A maximum of 8 climbers can ascend at a time. Sessions last for 30 minutes to 90 minutes according to your preferences. We recommend a time of 45 minutes.

0-5 minutes: Climbers (or parents/guardians) sign disclaimer. climbers are fitted with harnesses and helmets

5-10 minutes: climbers are instructed in the technique and attached to climbing lines

10 minutes onwards: climbers ascend and spend time in the tree

5 minutes before the end of the session climbers descend and remove harnesses and helmets and receive a certificate

The next 8 climbers are then ready to ascend.

The technique

The Double Rope Technique is a safe method used by arborists and tree climbers the world over. Climbers wear a harness and are attached to a climbing line which is secured to a strong branch. Using a system of friction knots, the climber uses the power in their legs to propel themselves up the rope, and into the tree.
